Megan & Susan

Susan Goldie is a fashion designer with 30+ years of experience in fashion including theatrical costume design, commercial clothing production, and couture evening/bridal wear design and production. Susan is the founder of sewnow! fashion studio near San Francisco, one of the first ever sewing studios in North America. She and the sewnow! team have had the privilege of teaching thousands of kids and teens fashion design and sewing, and have developed a specialized approach to fashion sewing that goes beyond traditional home sewing instruction and jumps forward to teaching the commercial assembly techniques that make creating your own clothing fast and easy. Susan’s pattern company FashionKit now makes her fashion sewing method available to sewists and studios everywhere.

Susan loves to seek out the world's best designers, craftspeople, and materials. She's been seen digging through wholesale fabric markets in the fashion districts of LA, New York, Paris, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, New Delhi, and Bangkok. When she’s not sewing, you might find her enjoying a good book, exploring art and painting, or sharing family meals or travel with her husband Peter, and her grown sons, William and Matthew.

Susan can’t wait to connect with the Sewing Boss Community and is ecstatic to share all her sewingpreneur learning at Sewing Boss Conference!

The first thing Megan Avery ever sewed is a quilted jacket with giant frog toggles. It was a project for jer 4-H Club Clothing Review when she was ten and an active member in her local 4-H club the, Handy Helpers. What she loves most about teaching sewing is that she can relive this experience almost daily with her sewing students. Her studio M Avery Designs, and sewing, still bring her the same happiness she felt at ten sewing with the 4-H Club. She strives to pass this on to her students, from kids as young as age 6 to adults who have never picked up a needle and thread.

As a full time creative entrepreneur for the last 18 years, Megan has gone from custom handbag designer, to sewing instructor & studio owner, to creative business coach. Her business has changed & developed a great deal over the years. She’s proven that being a sewing instructor doesn’t have to be “just for fun” by successfully earning a proper living, each year surpassing her sales totals from the year before.

She continues to be invigorated by her latest business endeavor, Hipstitch Academy, which aims to help other people start & grow their very own sewing businesses. Hipstitch Academy does this by providing sewing patterns, curriculum & training. She hopes to help other bosses create successful sewing businesses, similar to her own.
